Simple Cooking Life

Hi, I’m Jessica Marino, and I live in a quiet town in Missouri with my four year old son William and our fluffy Pomeranian.

Our home is not large, but it is full of noise, tiny shoes by the door, and toy cars that somehow end up under every piece of furniture.

Most evenings you can find us in the kitchen with music playing while I cook dinner and William helps by stirring something very seriously.

I’m Jessica Marino

By day, I work full time as a financial consultant. I meet with clients, review portfolios, explain numbers, and help families plan for retirement or save for their children’s education. Spreadsheets, reports, and scheduled meetings fill my weekdays.

I care deeply about my work, and I am grateful for the stability it provides us. Once I close my laptop, though, my focus shifts completely.

The suit jacket comes off, the comfortable clothes go on, and I step into the role that matters most to me: being William’s mom.

I became a single mom earlier than I expected in life, and the experience reshaped me. I learned how strong I could be, and I also learned how tired I could be.

I manage our finances carefully, plan our weekly meals, keep track of preschool forms, and still make space for bedtime stories.

Some nights feel long, especially after a full workday, but when William curls up next to me with his favorite book, I am reminded why I push myself.

My Son – William

William is curious and sensitive. He loves dinosaurs, construction trucks, and anything that involves building. He asks big questions for a small person.

Last week he asked why people have different houses and if everyone feels safe in their home.

I try to answer honestly while keeping his world secure and hopeful. I want him to grow up kind, aware, and confident enough to think for himself.

Our daily rhythm is simple and steady. I wake up around 5:30 in the morning before anyone else. That quiet half hour with coffee in my hand feels sacred.

I review my schedule, pack William’s lunch, and sometimes write a few notes for this blog.

By 6:30, I hear little footsteps coming down the hallway. He always greets me with the same question: “What are we doing today?”

After preschool pickup, we usually stop by the park if the weather allows. Missouri seasons bring beautiful changes, and I try to help William notice them.

In spring, we look for the first flowers. In summer, we stay out late chasing fireflies in the yard. Fall means collecting colorful leaves and talking about why trees shed them.

Winter evenings often turn into blanket forts in the living room, complete with flashlights and whispered stories.

William Feeds Pomeranian

At home, I involve William in small responsibilities. He feeds our Pomeranian every evening and carefully fills the water bowl without spilling too much.

He helps match socks from the dryer and wipes down the table after dinner. These tasks may seem tiny, yet they build confidence. I want him to feel capable, not just cared for.

Our dog adds constant entertainment to our lives. He follows William everywhere and barks at the vacuum as if it is a personal enemy.

William sits beside me with a brush, concentrating deeply as he tries to smooth out the fluffy fur. Caring for a pet has taught him patience and gentleness in a way no lecture ever could.

Parenting alone requires planning, so Sunday afternoons are my reset time. I sit at the kitchen table with a notebook and outline our week.

I list groceries, confirm appointments, and set small family goals. One week we focused on practicing gratitude by sharing one good thing about each day before bed.

Another week we worked on improving bedtime routines so mornings felt calmer. Small adjustments create noticeable changes in our home.

Screen time stays limited in our house. I allow short educational programs, but I prefer outdoor play, books, and hands-on activities.

William has a small art corner with crayons, washable paint, and stacks of paper. Some of his drawings now decorate our refrigerator door. He once drew our family with the dog almost as tall as me.

This blog grew from my desire to document our journey. Photos on my phone capture moments, but writing captures feelings.

I want to remember the way William mispronounces certain words or how he insists on wearing superhero pajamas to the grocery store. These small details shape our story.

You will find posts here about parenting lessons learned through trial and error. I will share honest reflections about discipline, patience, and boundaries.

I plan to write about managing a household budget as a single parent, organizing a small home efficiently, and creating meaningful traditions without spending much money.

I also want to talk about personal growth, because motherhood has pushed me to become more organized, resilient, and compassionate.

Some days feel overwhelming, and work deadlines overlap with preschool events. In those moments, I pause and remind myself of my priorities.

A peaceful home requires consistency, love, and effort. I choose to focus on progress instead of comparison.

If you are here reading this, I hope you feel like you are sitting at my kitchen table with a warm drink while our dog circles your feet.

My goal is to build a community of women who want to grow, support one another, and create better lives for their families. I do not have all the answers, but I am willing to share my journey honestly.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know us. This small blog represents a big part of my heart.

My Story

This blog grew from my desire to document our journey.

And dear moms, we are superman, and we are proud to say loudly that we are worth being loved and doing anything we love.
